About M.Sc Social Development


The MSc programme in Social Standards will provide opportunities for advanced knowledge and skill acquisition for a career in the private and public sectors of the national and global economies. The aim is to strengthen the capacity of the students in problem analysis and solving. Students should be able to articulate, develop and implement research using social standards concepts and methodologies.

Philosophy


The underlying philosophy of M.Sc. programme in Social Standards is to produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge and skills in the solution of contemporary social issues. It will ensure human dignity and fundamental social rights thereby contributing to the development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community.

Aims and Objectives


The major aims and objectives of the programme are to:

  • Equip students with broad knowledge of social standards and application of theories, models, methods and approaches.
  • Instill in students a sound knowledge of Social Standards, in appreciation of its application in different socio-cultural contexts.
  • Cultivate in students the ability to apply social standards knowledge to understanding of growing societal problems in Nigeria and elsewhere.
  • Expose students to appreciate the importance of social standards in socio- cultural, legal, economic, political, industrial and environmental contexts.
  • Equip students with joint problem solving skills through social standards.
  • Impact students with relevant knowledge and skill needed to proceed for further studies in special areas of social standards.

Admission Requirements


The criteria for admission into the MSc Social Standards programme will be as follows:

  • Candidates must meet the basic matriculation requirement of individual universities which is 5 O’ level credits including English Language and Mathematics.
  • Candidates with Second Class (Lower Division) Bachelor’s degree in Social Standards, Social Work, Sociology or a related discipline from an approved university or the postgraduate diploma with a CGPA of not lower than 3.0 on a 5-point scale from an accredited university.
  • Candidates with a PGD at credit level pass on weighted percentage average.

Duration Of The Programme


The duration of the Master of Science (MSc) Social Standards degree programme will depend on the mode of offering as follows:

  • Full-Time: A minimum of 4(four) semesters and a maximum of 6(six) semesters; and
  • Part-Time: A minimum of 6 (six) semesters and a maximum of 8 (eight) semesters.

For Extension beyond the maximum period, special permission of the University Senate shall be required.

Requirements For Graduation


To be awarded the Masters Degree, a candidate must obtain a minimum of 36 credit units made up of the following:

  • Core courses of twenty two (22) credit units.
  • Elective courses of eight (8) credit units.
